July 6, 2008 J/22 Race Story

The 2008 Fleet 12 series for J/22's got off with a bang Sunday afternoon. Well, make that two bangs, as Race Committee Betty and Jack Hubbard were forced to signal the first Fleet 12 general recall in years. A strong current out the bay, nine anxious starters, a very light southerly, and a short line all combined to create an incorrigible mess at the pin. The recall was welcomed by most of the fleet, but especially by the late-arriving newcomer, the aptly named bob'syergrandaddy, skippered by Nick Johnstone.

While Fleet 12 boats  were four of the five entries in this year's Newport Regatta J/22 Division, the one invader from afar, Dave Nickerson of Noank, Ct., came with credentials, having won in J/35's at the New York Yacht Club Regatta held in Newport a couple of years back.  Nickerson's presence would raise the bar for the locals.

A light northerly breeze led the race committee to set course X-Ray (starting to the north) which in these conditions invariably results in an event filled with surprises, and this year wouldn't disappoint in that regard.  Five J/22's, including last year's winner Dudley Docker, sailed by Westy Barlow, took the gun as class Delta (fourth group to start), one of only two one-design classes.

 NEWPORT REGATTA- JULY 16 & 17 2005

This year's Newport Regatta turned out to be an exclusively Fleet 12 event, with seven boats racing a seven race series. The shaky weather forecast and thick fog had thankfully yielded to bright sunny skies and a light but steady southerly by late Saturday morning.

Fleet 12 Racing - August 13

A light northerly breeze prompted Race Committee Alice Noble Porter to set a starting line near the War College in a successful effort to run windward/leeward courses north of the bridge,  Race #1 course was 13p, finish; the tide was strongly out all afternoon.

J/22 Racing - July 30, 2006

A very light northerly greeted the fleet as Race Committee co-chairs Jim Porter and Joan Touchette Porter elected to set up the starting line just south of the marina channel entrance.  This location soon proved to be a wise choice as the breeze filled in nicely from the east southeast at 8 knots.  The Race #1 course was Yp (green can south of Goat Island), finish.  The tide was mid-ebb.

After a week of no racing while the Conanicut Yacht Club hosted the Optimist Team Race National Championships, Fleet 12 resumed its Sunday series and the pent up demand revealed itself with seven J/22’s on the starting line.  The junior regatta may have also taken its toll on volunteerism, however, as the lack of a formal Race Committee was only remedied by Louis Mariorenzi sounding out the sequence on board Blues eRacer.

Persistent showers and the threat of thunderstorms failed to dampen the spirit of Fleet 12's opening day as Race Committee co-chair and America's Cup veteran Joan Touchette set a starting line several hundred yards south of the club and announced a Race #1 course of Zp, 3p.  The breeze was SSW at 5 to 8 knots.  A flood tide current would build throughout the race day.  Paladin, skippered by FJ Ritt, squeaked by the pin to win the start and then successfully controlled the fleet to the windward

August 28, 2005 -  J/22 Racing As Race Committee Art Dutton and Peter Schott left the dock to man their post at Special Mark 3, Lowell Thomas was still ashore on his cell phone in a futile effort to find the rest of his Chaos crew.  So despite near perfect conditions, the only boats on the line for the final raceday were the only boats with a real stake in the outcome--Bad News, and Machbuster.
