OFFICIAL RULES

The Rhode Island Marine Fisheries 2007 regulations for minimum sizes and possession limits will be observed for the fishing derby. Any catch that violates these limits, for whatever reason, will be disqualified from the competition. For purposes of measuring a fish, total length is from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail. A copy of the summary of regulations is enclosed.

  • Fish must be caught in Jamestown waters.
  • The entrant may be helped by an older person in catching the fish.
  • Crabs, lobsters, shellfish, eels, jellyfish, and water snakes will not be accepted as fish.
  • The catch may not be stretched by any means!
  • Fish may not be caught by net or trap, however, a hand net may be used to land the fish from the line.
  • The weight may not be increased by putting lead or other weights into its body!
  • Fish brought or borrowed from a fish market, or fish caught by a person other then the entrant, shall not be permitted.
  • The winning catch shall be determined by multiplying the weight in ounces (16oz=1lb.), times the length in inches. EXAMPLE: a fish weighing 1 ¼ lbs. (20oz) and 6 ½" (7") = 140 points. If the entry was 6 ¼" it would be consider 6". The committee shall determine the point count of each entry.

Please come and enjoy the Fishing Derby. Good luck!
