Junior Lessons

CYC JUNIOR TENNIS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS, 2008:  June 16 - August 22

Beginners (ages 4, 5, 6)
Beginner clinics will be held on Monday and Friday from 11:00 - 11:45.  At this level, our goal is to motivate students in such a way that they enjoy tennis, while developing their motor skills.  We teach basic forehand, backhand, and volley strokes, using a variety of games and techniques.  Parents are also encouraged to follow up lessons using our ball hoppers. We’ll tell you how to follow up these lessons if you wish.

Intermediate (ages 7, 8, 9)
Intermediate clinics will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 1:00 - 2:00.  We continue to develop basic ground strokes and volleys, with the aim of having students start to hit from the baseline.  We introduce the serve at this level. We introduce some elements of competition, usually structured in drills and games.

Advanced (ages 10+ or recommended by pro)
Clinics will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 - 5:45. This group will also be scheduled for matches on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 - 2:30.  This schedule is coordinated with intermediate sailing times to try to avoid any conflicts.  Students at this level must be able to serve consistently, and be prepared to extend their game according to their ability.  Competition will be increased at this level of instruction.  Players will be given extensive drill work. Match play and strategies will be taught.  Round robin play and ladder matches will also be scheduled during these clinics. Advanced players will be scheduled to play on Wednesdays in our interclub matches and will also be encouraged to play in some of the junior tournaments scheduled in Rhode Island.

We will not be able to guarantee participation in the advanced program without prior registration.  If your son or daughter can only participate for a one, two or three week period, please sign up for that week.

High School
This group is scheduled from 10:30 - 12:00 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This program is designed for older students, many of whom are trying out or playing for high school teams. Many CYC junior players made their high school teams and have had successful seasons. The high school group will also be drilled in advanced techniques and strategies. At this level, strategies for doubles and singles are taught, with increasing emphasis on consistency of play. Our goal is to increase players’ power and consistency. Workout techniques will also be introduced.

 “Tournament Tough” Training
Tournament Tough Training is for 4th-8th graders interested in further developing their tennis game with drills and specific training.  (“TT” Players are also welcome to participate in the advanced sessions.)  The sessions will run from 3 - 4:00 Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Ideally we will create groups of 3 to 5 children who “train” together.  These children will be encouraged to compete in off-island events.

NOTE:  All clinics will have a 6:1 student to instructor ratio.

Play Friday with Lunch
All advanced junior players are invited to participate in supervised match play from 11:30 – 1 each Friday.  The tennis staff will arrange matches between junior members and provide a sandwich-based, buffet-style lunch.  Players must sign up by 6 p.m. on Thursdays.
Cost: $12 per day
