CYC hosted the 84th annual AROUND THE ISLAND race on Sunday, September 4, 2011. This race, begun in 1927, is the historic capstone to summer racing and the highlight of Labor Day Weekend for captains and crews alike.
"For 83 years the AROUND THE ISLAND race has drawn hundreds of boats from all over Narragansett Bay. Sailors enjoy an end-of-season day of sailing and compete for bragging rights to being the fastest to circumnavigate Conanicut Island" - John Mayers, event chair.
An awards ceremony was held at CYC during a post race party featuring cool libations, live music by The Ravers and dinner prepared by award winning Chef Chris Kaya.

Notice to Competitors:
Issued - 2 Sep 2011, 2000hrs:
Amendment to the NOR - SI for the Around the Island Race, 2011.
This amendment applies to paragraph 12. Courses, sections a. (Course ‘O'), b. (Course ‘X'), e. (Course ‘I'), and f. (Course ‘U').
The US Coast Guard has determined that the GR Bell, SW of Beavertail Point is off station approximately 200 yards North of its proper location. Therefore, courses ‘O', ‘X', ‘I', and ‘U' will round a Temporary Mark (orange tetrahedron buoy) that will be stationed at approximately the correct charted location of GR Bell. The displaced GR Bell and the Temporary Mark must both be passed to seaward. All vessels are encouraged to use a high level of caution in the waters surrounding Beavertail Point.

Blue Water Tennis is a Summer highlight team event for adults. This Year it's on Saturday, July 7th.
The event provides a day of extremely fun sporting socialization between sailors and tennis players regardless of their ability.
A round-robin handicapped tennis tournament is held in the morning, followed by a specially prepared lunch at the main clubhouse and a PHRF yacht race at 1:30 in the afternoon.
Teams compete for the coveted Ferguson Trophy and are named according to the yacht they will be sailing on in the afternoon race. Bring a full team to the event (8 members is the preferred team size) with a yacht (prefer 26' or longer) or sign up individually and we'll put you on a team.
Sailing Instructions will be posted soon and a copy of the Ferguson Trophy Deed of Gift are attached below.
Here is the description and rules for the event from the Ferguson Trophy Deed of Gift:
The Blue Water Tennis event is a combination tennis tournament and sailing race conceived in 1996 by then Fleet Captain Gerry Bay. By design, the event is meant to promote tennis and sailing activity and socialization among CYC members by providing sailing members who rarely play tennis and tennis playing members who rarely go out on a sailboat an opportunity to enjoy a day doing both in a mildly competitive spirit. This event is open to all CYC members in good standing. In respect to the original intent of this event, members wishing to partially participate and invited houseguests of CYC members may participate only with the approval of the event commissioner. The sailboats must be CYC member owned or chartered mono hull sailboats, have a valid PHRF-NB certification and be driven during the race by a CYC member in good standing. Format, handicapping and scoring of the tennis tournament shall be at the discretion of the event commissioner. All determinations regarding the winner of the sailing race will be sanctioned by the current race committee. The overall winner will be determined by the event commissioner.
We hope you can come!

In spite of a threat of showers for the day and light winds in the afternoon, the players came pouring in. A record 6 teams and 46 participants this year!
The Godzilla team won the tennis tournament in the morning and team Downhill Express won the yacht race in the afternoon. Team Godzilla captured the overall event championship in a tiebreaker with Sea Shadow coming in second and Downhill Express in third. The Beals' Four Suns team came in a point behind in fourth, the Baines' Scuppers (with fabulous new sails) was fifth and the Pyles' team Rigole was a close sixth.
2009
Over 50 folks of all levels of inability took to the tennis courts on beautiful Sunday the 5th for a wild round robin, 3-match tournament to begin the Blue Water Tennis day.
At noon, the gaggle of sneakered players, with team Godzilla in the lead, regrouped at the club for lunch and then off on "Bruce B" to six yachts for an equally enjoyable non-spinnaker race to glory.
Team Downhill Express got the gun (who knew) and after the handicap calculations, Commodore Pollock and his team on Sea Shadow got the win on the water. Final overall winner for the day, with a second place both on the courts and on the water was team Four Suns, with Captain Charley Beal.
Final results: (1) Four Suns/Beal, (2) Slipstream/Collins, (3) Godzilla/Wineberg and Sea Shadow/Pollock, (4) Picante/Salk, (5) Downhill Express/Ferguson.
